Jayalakshmi Alva, a revered figure in Indian classical dance, was born on October 25, 1933, in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, into a family with artistic roots. Her early passion for dance led her to become the first student of the legendary Nattuvanar Guru K. N. Dandayudhapani Pillai, making her official debut in 1948. She further honed her skills in Bharatanatyam, specializing in Abhinaya under the tutelage of Gurus Swarna Saraswati and Mylapore Gowri Ammal. Additionally, she received training in Kathakali from Guru Karunakar Panikar. Alva's career began with the establishment of her own institution, 'Chitrambalam Dance Center,' in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1959. She also contributed her expertise to Mrinalini Sarabhai's 'Darpana Academy' in Ahmedabad. During this period, she mentored notable students such as Bharatanatyam and Odissi dancer Sonal Mansingh and acclaimed film actress Waheeda Rehman. As a member of Mrinalini Sarabhai's Darpana troupe, she performed and lectured across India, North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. Later, she moved to Mangalore with her husband, Ramakrishna Alva, with aspirations of founding a dance academy akin to Kalakshetra. Following her husband's untimely demise, Jayalakshmi Alva persevered, establishing the 'Sridevi Nritya Kendra' in Mangalore in 1974. Through this institution, she dedicated her life to teaching and propagating Bharatanatyam, effectively creating what is known as the 'Mangalore Gharana' of the dance form. Her extensive repertoire included choreographing numerous dance compositions and ballets like 'Chitrambalam Kuravanji', 'Krishna Tulabharam', 'Vasantavalli', 'Krishna Keerthana', 'Swati Tirunal's Ramayana', 'Balaramayana', 'Navagraha', 'Nritya Govindam', 'Karavali Gatha', 'Harmony', and 'Pancha Kanya'. Jayalakshmi Alva passed away on July 22, 2015, at the age of 81, leaving behind a profound legacy carried forward by her many disciples, including her daughter Aarathi Shetty and granddaughter Saathvika.
