🪔 About
Jogen Dutta Bayan is a distinguished Indian classical dance figure, renowned for his profound contributions to Sattriya Nrittya, a classical dance form originating from Assam. His journey in the arts began at an early age when he was initiated into monkhood at the Uttar Kamalabari Sattra, a Vaishnavite monastery in Majuli. There, he received extensive training in the rich traditions of dance and music under esteemed gurus such as Paramananda Borbayan, Loknath Borbayan, and Seniram Borbayan, where he mastered Sattriya Nrittya and the khol, a percussion instrument. He also honed his skills in other traditional art forms like Ankiya plays, Bhaona, Oja-pali, and Bayan (percussion for Sattriya) under gurus like Juram Ojha, Roxeshwar Saikia Bayan, and Vishnu Chandra Dev Goswami. After dedicating years to the sattra, Jogen Dutta Bayan chose to exit at the age of 39, embarking on a path to popularize Sattriya beyond the confines of the monasteries. He became actively engaged in teaching and collaborating with local artists, opening numerous music and dance schools. He was associated with institutions such as Bongshigopal Natya Samiti, Sankardev Kala Parishad, and Majuli Kamalabari Central Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. His efforts were instrumental in bringing Sattriya to a wider audience. In 1975, he was part of a cultural contingent that performed in Indonesia with then-President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, showcasing Ankia Bhaona. His dedication to the art form was recognized with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2013 for his significant contributions as an artist and teacher of Sattriya dance. He was also conferred the title of Borbayan by Madhya Majuli Kamalabari Satra in 1999. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2013), Borbayan (1999).
