Jonaki Sarkar is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, currently holding the position of Director at Dancers' Guild in Kolkata, a renowned institution dedicated to the innovative contemporary Indian dance form, Navanritya. Her journey with Dancers' Guild began in 1986, where she became a dedicated disciple of its visionary founders, Dr. Manjusri Chaki Sircar and her daughter Ranjabati Sircar. Under their tutelage, Sarkar immersed herself in the principles and practice of Navanritya, a unique dance idiom that emerged in the 1980s. This distinctive form is characterized by its synthesis of traditional Indian classical dance techniques, yogic practices, and various martial arts, including elements from Chhau, Thang-Ta, and the Kandyan form of Sri Lanka, thereby creating a rich and expansive movement vocabulary. After years of dedicated training and contribution, Jonaki Sarkar assumed the role of Assistant Director. Following the passing of Dr. Manjusri Chaki Sircar in 2000, Sarkar stepped into the leadership position as Director, steadfastly upholding and advancing the artistic and educational mission of Dancers' Guild. Under her guidance, the institution has continued to flourish, nurturing new generations of dancers and preserving the pioneering work of its founders. Dancers' Guild boasts a significant legacy, having trained over five hundred students in its unique approach to contemporary Indian dance. In addition to her profound involvement with Navanritya, Jonaki Sarkar is also recognized as a respected guru in the Kathak tradition, actively participating in and leading Kathak dance programs, further demonstrating her versatility and depth within the Indian classical dance landscape. Her leadership ensures that the innovative spirit of Navanritya continues to inspire and evolve, while her commitment to Kathak enriches the traditional forms.
