Josyula Krishna Murthy was a distinguished figure in Indian classical arts, primarily recognized for his profound contributions as a mridangam artist and accompanist for Kuchipudi Yakshaganam. Born in 1928, he passed away on September 1, 2014, at the age of 86. While he initially embarked on his artistic journey as a dancer, often performing Sakhi roles, his passion gravitated towards the musical dimension of Kuchipudi Yakshaganam. He became a highly respected mridangam artist, specializing in the traditional talas and music of Sampradaya Kuchipudi Yakshaganam. His dedication to the art form was immense, having accompanied an impressive record of over 8,000 programs throughout his lifetime. His expertise and commitment to preserving the authentic musical traditions of Kuchipudi earned him national recognition. In 2005, Josyula Krishna Murthy was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his significant contributions to "Music for Dance" in the Kuchipudi Bhagavatha Maddalla category. He was also the father of renowned Bharatanatyam guru Josyula Satyanarayana Murthy, indicating a strong family lineage in classical dance.
