🪔 About

Julie Rocton is a French scholar and practitioner of Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam. She holds a doctorate in Indian studies from Aix-Marseille Université, specializing in Sanskrit language and literature and ancient and contemporary Indian aesthetic theories. Her research, which combines philology and ethnographic inquiry, focuses on the reception of Sanskrit treatises on dance and theatre, particularly the *Abhinayadarpaṇa* of Nandikeśvara, and the transmission and evolution of Bharatanatyam. She conducted fieldwork in Chennai and Pondicherry, India, between 2013 and 2016 for her doctoral thesis, which she defended in December 2018. Rocton is an associate member of the Centre Paul-Albert Février (CPAF-TDMAM) at Aix-Marseille Université. In addition to her academic work, she is a Bharatanatyam performer, having participated in recitals and workshops, including a performance in Pernes les Fontaines in 2023 with choreography by Kuttalam M. Selvam. She has also taught Sanskrit at Aix-Marseille Université since September 2023.
