Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair (1916–2000) was a legendary Indian classical dancer, renowned for his pioneering contributions to Kathakali, particularly in bringing prominence to female characters. Born in Kudamaloor village of Kottayam district, Kerala, he was initiated into Kathakali by Guru Kurichi Rama Panikkar. He further honed his skills under eminent masters such as Kurichi Kunhan Panikkar, Thottam Sankaran Namboodiri, and the Kochappi-Raman brothers. Nair later gained eminence in the northern school of Kathakali through his studies with Kavalappara Narayanan Nair. Karunakaran Nair specialized in 'Stree Vesha' or female roles, earning him the moniker "Mohini" of Kathakali. His graceful feminine movements and charming facial expressions made him the ideal heroine opposite legendary protagonists like Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair. He excelled in portraying roles such as Damayanti, Rukmini, Draupadi, Devayani, Mohini, and Lalita, and also performed male characters like Kuchelan and Naradan. His extensive career included a 39-year tenure as a court artist in the Kingdom of Travancore. He also served as a tutor at the FACT Kathakali School near Kochi and was the principal of Kudamaloor Kala Kendram, an institution established in his honor in 1978. Additionally, he directed the Satsangam International Centre for Art and Culture. Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair toured extensively, performing in America and various European countries, and a documentary film about his life was made in 1988. He made significant contributions to restoring Kathakali to its ancient glory and is considered a forerunner of artists like Kottakkal Sivaraman.
