K.S. Kalidas was a highly respected Indian Carnatic musician, renowned as a senior Mridangam Vidwan, guru, and writer. Born in 1938, he passed away on August 5, 2026, in Chennai at the age of 88. Kalidas received his initial mridangam training in Kolkata before moving to Chennai in 1956, where he became a prime disciple of the legendary Mridangam Vidwan Pazhani Subramanya Pillai. He is credited with preserving, documenting, and carrying forward the rich legacy of the Palani Subramania Pillai bani (style) of mridangam playing, a highly influential rhythmic tradition in Carnatic music. Kalidas was an acclaimed guru who meticulously groomed many young talents in the Pudukottai school of mridangam playing. His teaching legacy includes his son Ashok, Akshay Anand from Bangalore, L Subramanian, and his grandson Rohit Ashok. Beyond his musical contributions, Kalidas also had a distinguished career in the Indian Railways, joining as a Class I officer in 1962 and retiring as Chief Engineer in 1992. Following the passing of his guru, Pazhani Subramanya Pillai, in 1962, Kalidas temporarily ceased playing mridangam for six years. However, he later resumed his artistic pursuits, accompanying numerous artists across Chennai and India. An A-graded artist of All India Radio (AIR), he continued to perform until an accident in 2000 resulted in a severe fracture, compelling him to stop playing. K.S. Kalidas was also a prolific writer, contributing to Sruti magazine in Chennai for over two decades. His expertise extended to being an authority on both the Pudukottai and Tanjore styles of mridangam playing. In recognition of his profound contributions to Carnatic music, he was honored with the prestigious Sangita Kala Acharya title by The Music Academy in 2023.
