Kavungal Sankarankutty Panicker was a distinguished Kathakali actor, born into the renowned Kavungal family of Kathakali artists in Thichur village, Thrissur district, India. He was named after his uncle, K. Sankara Panicker. Sankarankutty Panicker received his primary Kathakali training from Pattikkantodi Ramunni Menon, an exponent of the Kalluvazhi (midland) style. He gained significant recognition for his portrayal of both 'paccha' characters, such as Krishna, Manikantha (Ayyappa), Dharmaputra Yudhishthira, and Arjuna, and 'katti' characters, including Duryodhana, Ravana, and Surpaka. Throughout his career, he served as the principal and lead actor at the Kollangod royal troupe's school in Palakkad district for many years. Additionally, he imparted his knowledge and expertise by teaching at the Kathakali Sangham in Thiruvananthapuram. His contributions to Indian classical dance were recognized with prestigious awards, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1974 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1975.
