Kalamandalam Govinda Warrier was a legendary figure in Indian classical dance, specifically renowned for his profound contributions to Kathakali, particularly in the intricate art of Chutti (makeup) and costume development. He served as a revered guru, or 'ashan', at the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, an institution established in 1930 in Cheruthuruthy, Thrissur, Kerala, dedicated to preserving and promoting the classical arts of the region. Warrier is credited with significantly developing the costumes and makeup techniques for Kathakali, notably pioneering the use of paper in creating the elaborate Chutti, which is the facial makeup that defines Kathakali characters. His expertise and innovative approach to *aharya* (costume and makeup) were instrumental in the reformation and pinnacle of this aspect of Kathakali, alongside other masters like Vazhenkada Rama Warrier. His teaching legacy is evident through his highly accomplished disciples, who became prominent makeup artists in Kathakali. Among his notable students is Kalamandalam Barbara Vijayakumar, who, after graduating in 1976, became the world's first female Kathakali chutti artist. She later co-founded the Kala Chethena Kathakali Company in the UK, dedicated to popularizing Kathakali internationally. Another distinguished disciple was Kalamandalam Rama Mohan, celebrated for his scientific approach, creativity, and discerning sense in applying the chutti for various Kathakali characters, including Pacha, Kathi, and Thadi. Rama Mohan, under Warrier's tutelage, also played a crucial role in the upkeep of Kathakali and Koodiyattam *aharya* at Kerala Kalamandalam.
