Kalamandalam Venmani Haridas (born September 15, 1946, died September 17, 2005) was a highly acclaimed Indian Kathakali musician, renowned for his evocative rendition of Kathakali padams (playback songs) in the classical dance-drama tradition of Kerala. Born Haridas at Venmani Mana, a Namboodiri household in Vellarappilly village near Aluva, Kochi, he developed an early interest in Kathakali by observing performances at the nearby Akavoor Mana. Haridas received his initial music training under Mundakkal Sankara Varrier, learning Kathakali padams from traditional stories such as Rukmini Swayamvaram and Kuchela Vritham. In 1960, he joined Kerala Kalamandalam, a premier institution for performing arts, where he honed his skills under leading Kathakali musicians including Kalamandalam Neelakantan Nambisan, Sivaraman Nair, and Kalamandalam Gangadharan Nair. He was notably the first student of Kalamandalam Gangadharan when the latter began teaching at the institution. Upon completing his studies at Kalamandalam in 1968, Haridas joined Darpana, the noted performing arts institute founded by danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai in Ahmedabad, as a music teacher. This period exposed him to various North Indian classical music styles, which later influenced his innovative approach to Kathakali singing. A decade later, in 1978, he returned to his home state, taking up a position as a music teacher at Margi in Thiruvananthapuram, where he dedicated three decades of his career. Beginning his stage career as an accompanist singer (shinkiti) primarily under Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri, Haridas' melodious voice, clear enunciation, and emotional depth quickly propelled him to become an eminent lead singer. He was celebrated for retaining the emotion-laden Sopanam style of Kathakali music while skillfully incorporating the microtone-heavy voice culture of Carnatic music. Haridas, along with Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri and Kalamandalam Hyderali, played a pivotal role in popularizing Kathakali music, often performing independent Kathakali music concerts. He was a favored vocal accompanist for Kathakali masters like Kalamandalam Gopi, Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, Kottakkal Sivaraman, and Kalamandalam Vasu Pisharody. Beyond the stage, he also acted in two Malayalam feature films, "Swaham" and "Vanaprastham," both directed by Shaji N. Karun. His legacy is further honored by a biography titled "Bhava Gayakan" and a 2012 documentary film, "Chitharanjini: Remembering the Maestro."
