Kalamandalam John, born in Kerala, India, in 1955, is a highly renowned figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Kathakali. He embarked on his Kathakali journey in June 1971, marking over 50 years in the art form by 2021. His rigorous training spanned nine years at the prestigious Kerala Kalamandalam, where he studied under eminent gurus such as Vazhenkada Kunchu Nair and his son, Vazhenkada Vijayan. He also received tutelage from C. Padmanabhan Nair and Vijayakumar. Further enriching his understanding of the art, John delved into Sanskrit and Kathakali literature under the guidance of Prof. Unnikrishnan Elayadu. His exceptional talent was recognized early in his career when he was awarded the A.D. Bolland Gold medal in 1977 for being the best Kathakali student, followed by a Government of India scholarship in 1978. After completing his studies, Kalamandalam John served as a teacher at Kerala Kalamandalam, imparting knowledge to both Indian and international students. He also toured extensively across India and abroad as a member of the Kalamandalam troupe, showcasing his artistry globally. Driven by a passion to teach and propagate Kathakali, he founded the Kalatharangini Kathakali School in Cheruthuruthy, Kerala, which has been a significant institution for over three decades, attracting international theatre groups and scholars. John is celebrated as a consummate performer, a venerated guru, and a versatile choreographer. He made history with his production "Chavaracharitam," which for the first time introduced a Christian priest on the Kathakali stage. His wife, Mary John, is also a pioneering artist, recognized as the first Indian female 'chuttikkari' (Kathakali make-up artiste). Kalamandalam John is an ambassador of Kathakali, frequently invited to lecture at esteemed international universities including the University of Sydney, University of Columbia, University of New York, Hunter College in the US, and the University of Bologna in Italy. He has received international recognition, including an honorary plaque from Teatro Tascabile di Bergamo (TTB), Italy, in 2003, a diploma from Odin Theatre, Denmark, and an honour from the Chancellor in Germany in the 1990s. He currently resides in Italy, continuing his global teaching and performing legacy. Awards & Honours: A.D.
