Kalamandalam Kesava Poduval (1931-2020) was a highly respected chenda maestro and guru, renowned for his contributions to Kathakali percussion and Thayambaka. Born in 1931 in Kudal village near Kuttipuram in Malappuram district, he received his initial training from his father, Achutha Poduval. His arangetam in thayambaka took place at the age of 12, and he also performed in panchavadyam ensembles. In 1957, he joined Kerala Kalamandalam to specialize in Kathakali chenda, where he was mentored by masters like Achunni Poduval and Krishnankutty Poduval. Poduval initially gained recognition as a thayambaka artist, known for his adherence to the Malamakkavu style. However, by the mid-1970s, he gradually shifted his focus to Kathakali chenda, redefining its aesthetics with his sensitive and understated playing style. He worked with Parissinikadavu Muthappan Kaliyogam from 1961 to 1963. In 1964, he joined RLV College of Music and Fine Arts in Tripunithura as a chenda teacher, serving there until his retirement in 1986. Even after retirement, he continued to impart knowledge through private tuitions, grooming numerous talents in Kathakali chenda, thayambaka, and melam. He accompanied many Kathakali legends throughout his long and fruitful career. Kalamandalam Kesava Poduval passed away on October 10, 2020, months before his 90th birthday. A documentary titled 'NadaKesavam' was released in early 2017 to honor his contributions.
