🪔 About
Kalamandalam Neeraj is a Kathakali artist and instructor at Kerala Kalamandalam, a prominent institution for performing arts in India. Hailing from Kolathur, Malappuram, he commenced his formal training in Kathakali at Kalamandalam in 2000, joining as a Class VIII student and subsequently completing his postgraduation at the institution. He is currently engaged in research focused on the 'transforming perception of elegance in Kathakali'. Neeraj is recognized for his innovative choreographic and directorial work, notably adapting Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" into a Kathakali play, which was staged in 2025 and garnered acclaim for its integration of traditional Kathakali grammar with modern theatrical elements. He also collaborated with his father, P. Mohandas, to write and choreograph 'Koormapuranam Uthara Kandam', a play staged by Kathakali students in 2022. In 2021, he lead-choreographed "Palazhi Madhanam". As an Instructor Grade II at Kerala Kalamandalam, he plays a role in training the next generation of Kathakali artists.
