Born on May 12, 1970, he began his Kathakali training at the tender age of seven. He further honed his skills at Kerala Kalamandalam, where he studied from 1989 to 1996, focusing on the southern style of the art form. Ravi Kumar is renowned for his expertise in portraying "Kathi," "Thadi," and "Vellathadi" characters in Kathakali performances. He currently serves as a teacher at Kerala Kalamandalam and holds the significant position of Head of the Department of Vesham (southern style) at the institution. His contributions extend to encouraging and supporting fellow artists, such as Kalamandalam Rajeevan Namboothiri, in initiatives like online Kathakali classes. He has also been instrumental in the evolving landscape of Kathakali education, overseeing the arangetram of the first batch of female students in the southern style at Kerala Kalamandalam.
