Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri (1944–2007) was a highly influential Kathakali musician, renowned for revolutionizing the vocal music of this classical dance-drama from Kerala, South India. Born on September 7, 1944, in Vellayoor village, Malappuram district, Embranthiri hailed from a humble Brahmin family. He began his musical journey by learning Carnatic music from G.P. Govinda Pisharody, Thripunithura Sankara Warrier, and M.R. Peethambara Menon. He joined Kerala Kalamandalam in 1957 or 1958, where he underwent intensive training in Kathakali music from 1957 to 1965 under esteemed gurus such as Kalamandalam Neelakandhan Nambeesan, Kalamandalam Sivaraman Nair, Kavungal Madhava Panikkar, and Kalamandalam Gangadharan. Embranthiri's career as a Kathakali music teacher began at the Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam in Irinjalakuda, where he taught from 1965 to 1970. Subsequently, in 1970, he joined the Fine Arts Wing of FACT (Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Ltd.) near Kochi as a Kathakali Music Teacher, a position from which he eventually retired. He gained significant prominence in the early 1970s for his unique vocal style, characterized by a velvety voice, clear diction, and an easy command over three octaves, which brought a new aesthetic to Kathakali music. He was instrumental in pioneering Kathakali Pada Kacheris, concerts where only Kathakali padams (songs) were performed, thereby giving Kathakali music an identity independent of the visual dance. Embranthiri also introduced the practice of the lead (Ponnani) and subordinate (Sinkidi) musicians singing together, a departure from the traditional call-and-response system. Despite facing severe health challenges, including a kidney transplant in 1991 and the amputation of his right leg due to acute diabetes, Embranthiri continued to perform, often from a wheelchair, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the art form. He passed away on November 13, 2007, leaving a significant void in the Kathakali music landscape.
