Kalanilayam Balakrishnan, also known as Balasan, is a highly regarded Kathakali actor-dancer, scholar, and influential teacher from Kerala, India. Born on November 16, 1952, he has significantly contributed to the preservation and propagation of this classical dance-drama form. He began his intensive Kathakali training at the age of 13 in 1965 at the Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam in Irinjalakkuda. His esteemed gurus included Pallippuram Gopalan Nair, Kalamandalam Kuttan, Kalanilayam Raghavan, Kottakkal Sivaraman, Sadanam Krishnankutty, and the legendary Kizhppadam Kumaran Nair. Balakrishnan specializes in Pacha (green), Kathi (knife), and Vella Thadi (white beard) roles. He is known for his masterful portrayals such as the compassionate Lord Krishna in Kuchelavritam, where he evokes deep empathy through subtle expressions, and the multifaceted Ravana in Ravanodbhavam, seamlessly shifting between arrogance and tenderness. His acting prowess also extends to suggestive subtlety, as seen in the tender Harinakshi padam as Keechaka in Keechaka Vadham. As an educator, Balakrishnan has shaped generations of artists, serving on the faculty of institutions like the Delhi International Cultural Centre and Sreekrishnapuram Kalakendram. Since 1982, he has held the prominent position of Principal at Sadanam Kathakali Academy in Palakkad, Kerala. His teaching legacy includes notable disciples such as Sadanam Bhasi, Manikandan (senior and junior), Krishnadas, and Vijayan Warrier. His sons, Arun Babu and Vishnu Prasad, are also trained Kathakali performers, with Arun Babu also being a Kathakali learner at Sadanam Kathakali Academy and a diploma holder in Kathakali music. Kalanilayam Balakrishnan was honored with the inaugural Pattikkamthodi Smaraka Puraskaram in 2012, recognizing his dedication to preserving traditional techniques and training future generations.
