🪔 About
Kalanilayam Rajeevan is a highly respected and sought-after Kathakali musician and choreographer from Kerala, India. Born into a traditional Namboodiri family in Vazhakkulam, Aluva, his early fascination with Kathakali was primarily drawn to the musical accompaniment rather than the dance itself. Despite his father's wish for him to pursue a graduate degree, Rajeevan's passion for Kathakali music led him to Muvattupuzha, where he was initiated into the art form by Kalamandalam Balachandran. He further honed his skills at Unnai Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam, undergoing rigorous training under maestros such as Kalamandalam Rajendran and Kalamandalam Narayanan Embranthiri. Following his studies at Kalanilayam, Rajeevan received advanced training for four years under the tutelage of the renowned Kathakali musician Hyderali. His career as a Kathakali vocalist spans over two and a half decades, during which he has captivated audiences with his distinctive style. He made his debut as a 'ponnani' (main musician) in 'Thoranayudham' at Aluva, performing alongside legendary Kathakali artist Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair. Throughout his illustrious career, Rajeevan has had the privilege of accompanying stalwarts like Madavur Vasudevan Nair, Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair, and Kalamandalam Gopi, with the latter famously describing him as the personification of 'Arangu paattu'. Beyond his vocal prowess, Rajeevan is also recognized as a resourceful choreographer, with works such as 'Jayandracharitham', 'Mookambika Mahatmyam', and 'Dundubhi Mayavi' to his credit. He is also appreciated for his role as a 'director' on the Kathakali stage, ensuring the timely provision of stage props. A globe-trotting musician, Kalanilayam Rajeevan performs on an average of over 260 stages annually, a testament to his popularity and demand in the Kathakali fraternity.
