🪔 About

Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma (1915 – 1999) was an epoch-making Mohiniyattam dancer and researcher from Kerala, India, widely regarded as the "Mother of Mohiniyattam" for her pivotal role in resurrecting the dance form from near extinction and giving it a formal structure and ornamentation. Born in Thirunavaya, Malappuram district, she joined Kerala Kalamandalam in 1937 as one of its early students. She received her primary Mohiniyattam training from Korattikkara Appuredatt Krishna Panicker and also trained in Kathakali under Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon. Her arangetram took place in 1939. After graduating in 1940, she began actively teaching Mohiniyattam in 1941. In 1952, she co-founded the dance school Kerala Kalalayam with her husband, the renowned Kathakali maestro Padma Shri Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair. Kalyanikutty Amma systematized the Mohiniyattam style she learned, developing a unique approach known as the 'Kalyanikutty Amma Style'. She reformed the recital with seven different items, codified 32 Adavus, composed Chollus, and reconstructed forgotten items like the Saptham. She authored two books, including "Mohiniyattam: Charithravum Aattaprakaravum (Mohiniyattam: History and Dance Structure)" (1992), which remains a significant reference text. She passed away on May 12, 1999, in Tripunithura at the age of 84. Awards & Honours: Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1974), Kendra Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1978), Keerthi Shanku (1980), Nritta Praveena (1984), Kerala Kalamandala Fellowship (1986), Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship (1992), Kalidasa Samman (1997), Kavayithri (1940).
