🪔 About
Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay (1903-1988) was a pioneering Indian social reformer, freedom fighter, and cultural visionary, renowned for her multifaceted contributions to independent India, particularly in the revival of traditional Indian handicrafts, handlooms, and theatre. Born on April 3, 1903, in Mangalore, Karnataka, she came from an aristocratic Saraswat Brahmin family. She was an exceptional student and, from an early age, exhibited determination and courage. She studied the ancient Sanskrit drama tradition of Kerala, Kutiyattam, under the tutelage of Nātyāchārya Padma Shri Māni Mādhava Chākyār. Kamaladevi played a significant role in India's freedom struggle, joining Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement in 1923 and becoming a prominent figure in the All-India Women's Conference. Post-independence, she dedicated herself to cultural revival and institution-building. She was instrumental in establishing the All India Handicrafts Board and served as its first chairperson. She also founded the Crafts Council of India and the World Crafts Council (WCC), becoming the first president of the WCC's Asia Pacific Region. Her contributions to performing arts were equally profound. In 1964, she founded the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography (NIKC) in Bangalore under the aegis of Bharatiya Natya Sangh, affiliated with UNESCO. She also headed the National School of Drama and the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama, shaping India's premier institutions for music, dance, and drama. Through her vision, she fostered artists, preserved classical and folk traditions, and ensured government support for cultural initiatives, leaving an indelible mark on India's cultural landscape. Awards & Honours: Padma Bhushan (1955), Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership (1966), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Ratna Sadasya) (1974), UNESCO Award for handicrafts promotion (1977), Padma Vibhushan (1987), Desikottama (Shantiniketan's highest award).
