Kanaka Sathasivan is an Austin, Texas-based Bharatanatyam teacher and an active figure in the local Indian classical dance community. She has been involved in the classical dance community in Austin for over 30 years and began teaching Bharatanatyam in 2000 with the Natyalaya School of Dance. Through her teaching, she has guided numerous students through their arangetram training. Sathasivan is also the founder and director of Natya Sabhai Arts, an award-winning lighting and stage management company established in 2007, which supports South Asian productions by combining Western theater techniques with ancient Indian forms of theater. Her work with Natya Sabhai Arts has assisted with over 150 shows since 2009 and provides free training in theater tech to young girls and women. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in reviving the Indian Dance Endeavor of Austin (IDEA) in 2021, serving as its president and securing significant grants for productions. She credits Mrs. Vinitha Subramanian, founder of Natyalaya School of Dance, and Narendra Kumar as her key mentors. Beyond her contributions to dance, Sathasivan also works as a public health communications expert at the Texas Health Institute.
