Kanchan Maradan is an accomplished Indian classical Kathak dancer, teacher, and choreographer, whose journey in dance began in Mumbai, India, where she was born and developed a passion for the art form from childhood. Her initial Kathak training commenced in London. A pivotal moment in her artistic development was witnessing a performance by the renowned Madhavi Mudgal, which deeply inspired her to return to India to immerse herself further in the intricacies of Kathak and Indian culture. She subsequently enrolled at the prestigious Gandharva Mahavidyalay in New Delhi. Here, she honed her skills under the guidance of Ms. Prerana Shrimali, a distinguished doyen of the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak. Kanchan successfully completed her Alankaar (MA) in Kathak and also earned a Vishaarad (BA) in Hindustani vocals from this esteemed institution, demonstrating her comprehensive understanding of Indian performing arts. With a career spanning over 22 years, Kanchan Maradan has established herself as a versatile performer, gracing numerous stages and contributing to film projects, notably working with the internationally acclaimed director Fernando Meirelles. Her performances have taken her across the globe, with engagements in diverse countries including Brazil, France, India, Japan, Russia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Her dedication to her art has been recognized with a Junior Fellowship from the Indian Ministry of Culture, which she held from 2005 to 2007, and she has been a registered artist with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) since 2004. While deeply rooted in traditional Kathak, Kanchan also possesses a unique ability to fuse various dance styles, having taken classes in forms such as Flamenco, Classical Ballet, Tango, African Gumboot, Salsa, Jazz, and both Indian and Brazilian folk dances. Beyond her performing career, she has been actively involved in teaching Kathak since 2000, sharing her knowledge and passion with aspiring dancers.
