Kandalloor Unnikrishnan, a distinguished Kathakali Chenda artist, was born on August 12, 1971, in Puthuppally, Kayamkulam. His parents are Sri. Kandalloor Sadasivan and Smt. Bhasura. Unnikrishnan commenced his musical journey at the age of 12, receiving his initial Chenda lessons from his father, Sri. Kandalloor Sadasivan. He further honed his skills at Kshethra Kalapeedom, Vikom, where he trained under notable gurus such as Sri. Pazhoor Damodaramarar, Pulippura Krishnan Kutty, and Sadanam Divakaran. His expertise in Kathakali chenda was further refined through training with Sri. Kalamandalam Sivadasan. Unnikrishnan's Chenda arangettam (debut performance) in Kathakali took place at the revered Sri Vallabha temple in Thiruvalla. He is professionally active in Kathakali chenda, Thayambaka, Pancharimelam, and is recognized as an expert in performing Khethra vadyams in the southern region of Kerala. His contributions to the art form were acknowledged in 2005 when he was honored with the Pallippad Achutha Marar Puraskaram "Yuvakalaratna Award," presented by Kaladarpanam. Kandalloor Unnikrishnan is married to Meena and has two children, a son named Harikrishnan and a daughter named Meera Krishnan.
