Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer Subramanian, born on October 23, 1944, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, is a distinguished ninth-generation veena player of the illustrious Karaikudi Veena Tradition. His musical journey began with his mother, Lakshmi Ammal, an eighth-generation veena player. In 1957, he was adopted by his granduncle, the legendary Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer, and underwent rigorous gurukulavasa training at Kalakshetra in Chennai until his adoptive father's passing in 1958. Dr. Subramanian holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University (1986), where his dissertation focused on "South Indian Vina Tradition and Individual Style." He served as a Professor of Music at the University of Madras from 1986 until his retirement in 2002, and also held a visiting professorship at Amherst College. In 1989, he co-founded Brhaddhvani – Research and Training Centre for Musics of the World in Chennai with Dr. S. Seetha. Through Brhaddhvani, he developed the Correlated Objective Music Education and Training (COMET) system, a pioneering methodology that integrates tradition, technology, arts, and science to provide holistic music education. This system is designed to benefit a wide range of learners, including world musicians, dancers, and actors, thereby contributing significantly to the broader ecosystem of Indian classical arts. A "Top-Grade artist" of All India Radio, Dr. Subramanian has performed extensively across India, Europe, North America, Canada, and the Far East, often collaborating with international musicians. His album "Musik Für Vīṇā – Südindien," recorded with his sister Rajeswari Padmanabhan, received the German Record Critics' Award in 1980, and his album "Sunada" won the Naird Award in 1993. He has authored several publications, including "An Introduction to the Vina." His notable students include Srikumar Subramanian, Mathuriga, Thenuga, and his daughter Hamsa Raghuvir.
