🪔 About
Karuna Borah is a distinguished Indian classical dance figure, renowned for her significant contributions to Ankiya Bhaona, a traditional Assamese theatrical art form that integrates dance, music, and drama. She was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2022 for her excellence in Ankiya Bhaona. This national recognition highlights her dedication and mastery of the art form. Borah's association with the cultural landscape of Assam is further indicated by her past role as the Principal of Majuli Auniati He Ch. High School in Majuli, a prominent river island known for its rich Vaishnavite culture and performing arts traditions. Ankiya Bhaona, a creation of the 15th-16th century Assamese polymath Srimanta Sankaradeva, is considered the precursor to Sattriya dance, one of India's eight classical dance forms. Her work as a 'Satriya Xilpi' (Sattriya artist) has also been acknowledged, further cementing her role in preserving and promoting the traditional performing arts of Assam. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2022).
