Katherine Kunhiraman is a renowned figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam and Kathakali, and a pioneering guru who has significantly contributed to the dissemination of these art forms in the United States. Born in 1945, she moved to India at the age of 18 in 1963, where she embarked on a twelve-year immersion in classical dance. Her initial training took place in Kolkata, followed by extensive studies at Kalakshetra in Chennai, where she delved into Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, and Carnatic music. She pursued advanced Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of Shanta and V.P. Dhananjayan at Bharata Kalanjali, becoming their first graduate. Her arangetram, a significant debut performance, was held in 1969 at Bharatakalanjali, with Natyacharya Adyar K. Lakshmanan as the nattuvanar. During her time in India, she married her Kathakali teacher, K.P. Kunhiraman. In 1970, Katherine and K.P. Kunhiraman relocated to Berkeley, California, where they co-founded Kalanjali, an organization dedicated to teaching and preserving Indian classical dance. Kalanjali has thrived for nearly 50 years and functions as a branch of Bharatakalanjali. Katherine Kunhiraman is recognized as one of the West Coast's foremost teachers of classical Indian dance, having performed extensively across India, Lebanon, Egypt, the U.K., and the U.S.A. Her choreographic work includes "Osiris," a dance-drama premiered in 2011 that blends Indian classical dance with Egyptian mythology. She has dedicated over 50 years to the arts, inspiring thousands of students, many of whom have become professional performers. She continues to uphold her late husband's legacy through Kalanjali.
