Kavungal Sankarankutty Panicker was a distinguished Indian classical dancer, renowned for his mastery of Kathakali. Born into the illustrious Kavungal family of Kathakali artistes in Thichur village, Thrissur district, he inherited a rich artistic lineage. He was named after his uncle, K. Sankara Panicker, who was also a prominent figure in the art form. Panicker received his primary training in Kathakali from the esteemed guru Pattikkantodi Ramunni Menon, an exponent of the Kalluvazhi (midland) style. His performances were highly acclaimed, and he became particularly famous for portraying both "paccha" (heroic) characters such as Krishna, Manikantha (Ayyappa), Dharmaputra Yudhishthira, and Arjuna, as well as "katti" (anti-heroic) characters like Duryodhana, Ravana, and Surpaka. Beyond his performing career, Kavungal Sankarankutty Panicker also dedicated himself to teaching and nurturing the next generation of Kathakali artists. He served for many years as the principal and lead actor at the Kollangod royal troupe's school in Palakkad district. Additionally, he imparted his knowledge and expertise at the Kathakali Sangham in Thiruvananthapuram. His significant contributions to Kathakali were recognized with prestigious accolades, including the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1974 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1975, solidifying his status as a legendary performer in Indian classical dance.
