🪔 About
Keiko Okano is a Japanese Mohiniyattam dancer from Tokyo, Japan, dedicated to the South Indian classical dance form. Her journey into Mohiniyattam began in 2004 when she discovered a class in Tokyo led by Hiromi Maruhashi, who had previously studied at Kerala Kalamandalam. A pivotal moment occurred in 2008 when Okano attended a workshop by renowned Mohiniyattam exponent Guru Nirmala Paniker in Japan. Deeply inspired, she moved to Kerala, India, in May 2010 to undergo intensive training under Guru Nirmala Paniker at Natanakairali (Natanakaisiki Mohiniyattam Gurukulam) in Irinjalakuda. She continues to train annually under Paniker and has also received specialized training in Navarasa Sadhana from Koodiyattam master Guru G. Venu, and abhinaya training from Smt. Kapila Venu. Okano performed her arangetram (debut performance) on December 30, 2018, at Natanakairali. She has since performed extensively as a solo artist and with ensembles in various cities across India, including Kerala, Delhi, Chennai, and Bengaluru, as well as in her native Tokyo. Okano is committed to propagating Mohiniyattam in Japan and aspires to teach the dance form in the future.
