Kolanka Venkata Raju, born in 1910 in Tuni, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, British India, was an eminent Indian musician and a master exponent of the mridangam, a traditional barrel drum central to Carnatic classical music performances. He hailed from a distinguished lineage of Mridanga Vidwans, where percussion artistry was a cherished family tradition. Raju began his musical journey at the age of eight, receiving initial instruction from his uncle, Shri China Ramaswami Guru, before advancing his training under the guidance of Shri Muramala Gopalaswami of Kakinada. Throughout his decades-long career, Kolanka Venkata Raju established himself as a virtuoso accompanist and a revered teacher. He was profoundly influenced by and regularly accompanied luminaries such as the violin player Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu for many years. His repertoire as an accompanist extended to other giants of Carnatic music, including Ariyakudi Ramanuja Ayyangar, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Paladam Sanjeeva Rao, and Emani Sankara Shastri. Raju was renowned for his eminence in mridangam playing, characterized by a deep commitment to the traditional supportive role of the instrument in Karnatak music ensembles, emphasizing enhancement of vocalists and violinists without overpowering the main performer. Beyond performance, Raju contributed significantly to musical education, serving as a faculty member at the Music College in Vizianagaram and the Government Music College in Hyderabad. He also held a foundational role as a member of the Andhra Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi since its establishment. Kolanka Venkata Raju passed away on December 14, 2000.
