Kottakkal Devadasan is a highly acclaimed Indian classical Kathakali artist, renowned for his versatile and impactful performances. Born in 1966 (estimated from being 54 in January 2020 and 55 in May 2022) in Vazhenkada, a village in the Malappuram district of Kerala, he began his formal training in Kathakali at a young age. He joined the Kottakkal PSV Natyasangham in 1979, at either 12 or 14 years old, and underwent a rigorous 14-year kalari regimen. His esteemed gurus included the late Kottakkal Krishnankutty Nair, Kottakkal Chandrasekhara Warrier, and Kottakkal Sambhu Embrandiri. His stage debut occurred in 1980, where he performed as Krishna in "Subhadraharanam". Devadasan is particularly celebrated for his powerful portrayal of villainous Thadi (red beard) and Kari (black) characters, such as Dussasana, Veerabhadra, Kali, and Nakrathundi, bringing a unique vigor and glory to these often-lesser-popular roles. He is also adept at performing heroic Pacha and Kathi roles, demonstrating a wide spectrum of acting prowess. Beyond his dramatic roles, he has garnered significant popularity for his comic portrayals, including the Brahmin in "Rugmangadacharitham," Vriddha in "Kuchelavritham," and Mandhara in "Ramayana," often improvising to connect with the audience. With over 35 years of active presence on the Kathakali stage, Kottakkal Devadasan has performed extensively both within India and in international venues across European and West Asian countries. His contributions to Kathakali have been recognized with honors such as the Veera Sringhala, presented to him in Kozhikode in 2022, and the 'Kalahamsam' Award from the Ernakulam Kathakali Club. A documentary titled "Stage On Fire," directed by Sharath A Haridasan, is currently being made about his life and artistic journey, highlighting his role as a bridge connecting the past and present of Kathakali and his influence on younger generations.
