Kottakkal Kesavan Kundalayar is a distinguished Kathakali artist from Kerala, India, widely recognized for his compelling performances, particularly in 'kathi veshams' (anti-hero roles). His versatility also extends to 'pacha vesham' roles, demonstrating his mastery over various character types in the Kathakali repertoire. His profound journey into the world of Kathakali commenced at approximately twelve years of age when he enrolled at the prestigious P.S.V. Natya Sanghom in Kottakkal, accompanied by his elder brother, Vasudevan. Under the rigorous and traditional gurukulam-style training imparted by his revered guru, Kottakkal Krishnankutty Nair, Kesavan honed his skills and developed a unique artistic sensibility. He was deeply influenced by the Kalladikkoden style of Kathakali, which he observed during his formative years. Kesavan's arangetram, marking his official debut, took place at the sacred Viswambara Temple in Kottakkal. Over his extensive and illustrious career, he has graced the stage with numerous memorable portrayals. Notably, he performed the demanding role of Bhima in 'Kalyanasougandikam' for nearly five years, showcasing his endurance and depth as an actor. His powerful depiction of Parasurama in 'Seetha Swayamvaram' and Keechakan in 'Keechavadham' have also garnered significant acclaim. Beyond national borders, Kottakkal Kesavan Kundalayar has been instrumental in promoting Kathakali globally, undertaking international tours to countries such as China, North Korea, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. His contributions to the art form were further recognized when he was invited to perform at the Nritya Sangam: Festival of Dance, organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Bangalore. Since 1982, he has dedicated himself to teaching at P.S.V. Natya Sanghom, where he currently holds the esteemed position of principal, playing a pivotal role in nurturing and guiding the next generation of Kathakali artists. His professional approach to his art, including diligent preparation for every performance, underscores his commitment to excellence.
