Kottakkal Krishnan Kutty Nair was a distinguished Kathakali maestro, renowned for his profound contributions as a performer, teacher, and institution head within the Indian classical dance tradition. Born in 1928 in Vadanamkurussi, near Ottapalam in the Palakkad district of Kerala, he embarked on his Kathakali journey at the tender age of 12. After completing his primary education, he joined the prestigious P. S. V. Natyasangham in Kottakkal, Malappuram district, to immerse himself in the art form. His initial training was under the tutelage of Kuthanur Karunakara Panicker, and he made his debut as Krishna in the play "Subhadraharanam." Krishnan Kutty Nair further honed his skills under several legendary gurus, specializing for four years with Pattikkantodi Ramunni Menon, two years with Kavalappara Narayanan Nair, and another four years as a disciple of Vazhenkata Kunchu Nair. Throughout his illustrious career, he initially excelled in female roles before transitioning to portray the lead *paccha* (virtuous) and *katti* (anti-heroic) characters in significant Kathakali plays such as "Subhadraharanam," "Bakavadham," "Kalyana Saugandhika," "Kirmiravadham," and "Nivatakavacha Kalakeya-vadham." He was a master of the Kalluvazhi school of Kathakali and was also instrumental in reviving Ramanattam and developing new Kathakali plays. Kottakkal Krishnan Kutty Nair's dedication extended to teaching, where he became a highly respected guru. He served as the lead instructor-actor of P. S. V. Natyasangham from 1960 and later ascended to the position of its principal, shaping generations of Kathakali artists. His notable students include acclaimed performers like Sadanam Krishnankutty, Kottakkal Sasidharan Nair, and Kottakkal Nandakumaran Nair.
