Kottakkal Sivaraman (1936 – 2010) was a legendary Indian Kathakali artiste renowned for revolutionizing the portrayal of female roles, known as 'streevesham', in the classical dance-drama form from Kerala, South India. Born in Karalmanna village, Palakkad district, in 1936, Sivaraman began his Kathakali journey at the young age of 13. His formal training commenced at the PSV Natyasangham in Kottakkal, Malappuram district, under the tutelage of his uncle and eminent guru, Vazhenkada Kunchu Nair, for approximately twelve years. His debut stage performance, or 'Arangettam', took place on November 15, 1949, at the Kottakkal Viswambhara Temple, where he performed the role of Lavana. Sivaraman's career, spanning over five decades, was marked by his profound ability to infuse female characters with unprecedented emotional depth and grace, challenging the traditional secondary status they held in the male-dominated art form. He excelled in iconic roles such as Damayanti, Draupadi (Sairandhri), Kunti, and Mohini, often sharing the stage with other stalwarts like Kalamandalam Gopi and Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair. His interpretations were celebrated for their versatility and classical precision, earning him widespread acclaim across Kerala and internationally. Beyond female roles, Sivaraman also skillfully performed male characters like Krishna and Pushkara and choreographed a new play titled "Pingala". Despite his immense influence, Kottakkal Sivaraman did not establish or lead any performing arts academy and notably declined offers to teach at institutions like Kalamandalam, preferring to focus on his performance career. It is documented that he had no formal disciples, yet his innovative approach and masterful characterizations inspired and were emulated by countless Kathakali actors performing female roles. His significant contributions to Kathakali were recognized with numerous prestigious awards. He received the Kerala Kalamandalam Award in 1990, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award in 1996, and the highly esteemed Sangeet Natak Akademi Award from the Government of India in 1998. Further accolades include the Kathakali Puraskaram, the Kerala State Government's highest award for Kathakali artistes, in 2009, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Fellowship in 2008, and the "Sthree Ratnam" award from the Kerala Government for his exceptional female portrayals. Kottakkal Sivaraman passed away on July 19, 2010, leaving behind an indelible legacy that redefined female characterization in Kathakali.
