🪔 About

Kottarakkara Ganga is a distinguished Indian classical dancer, widely recognized for her contributions to Kathakali, a traditional dance-drama form native to Kerala. Born on October 15, 1952, in Kottarakkara, Kollam District, she pursued a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, graduating in 1974. Despite being born into a Tamil Brahmin family where girls were not traditionally encouraged to learn Kathakali, Ganga embarked on her artistic journey in 1982 after her marriage, initially driven by a desire to understand the art form more deeply. She received her training under eminent gurus such as Mayyanad Kesavan Namboothiri, Nelliyode Vasudevan Namboothiri, and Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan. Ganga made her debut performance in 1983, portraying the character of Lalitha in the Kathakali attakatha 'Narakasura Vadham'. Her talent was quickly recognized, and her guru, Kesavan Namboothiri, encouraged her to take on male characters, a pioneering step for women in the predominantly male bastion of Kathakali. Over her career spanning more than three decades, Kottarakkara Ganga has performed on over 2,500 stages, embodying hundreds of characters. She is particularly known for her expertise in male roles, including 'Chuvanna Thadi' characters like Dhusshasanan, Trigartha, Bali, Bakan, and Veerabadran, as well as 'Kari' characters such as Kirathan and Kattalan from Nalacharitham, and Rakshasi characters like Simhika and Surpanakha. Her performances have captivated audiences worldwide, and she is celebrated for her ability to evoke a broad range of emotions. Ganga Kottarakkara is considered one of the pioneering female Kathakali artists in Kerala, challenging traditional norms and inspiring more women to embrace the art form. Awards & Honours: Award for Kathakali (2000), Kalamandalam Award (2009), Kottarakara Thampuran Award (2010), Kerala Government Cultural Award (2010).
