Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair (1916-2000) was a pioneering Indian Kathakali artiste renowned for his masterful portrayal of female characters in the classical dance-drama from Kerala, South India. Born in 1916 near the Kudamaloor Vasudevapuram temple in Kottayam district, he began his Kathakali training at a young age under eminent gurus such as Kurichi Rama Panicker, Kurichi Kochappi Panicker, and Kurichi Kunjan Panicker. He further honed his skills in the northern Kathakali style as a disciple of Kavalappara Narayanan Nair. Karunakaran Nair specialized in female impersonation, a role he performed for over fifty years, cultivating a captivating smile and graceful feminine expressions. His prominent roles included aristocratic characters like Damayanti, Rukmini, Draupadi, and Devayani, as well as enchantresses such as Mohini and Lalita. He also depicted various caste types and excelled in conveying the sringara (erotic) and karuna (sad) aspects of women. His professional career often saw him as the ideal heroine opposite the legendary Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair's protagonists. He also performed male roles like Kuchelan and Naradan. His career milestones include joining the main troupe of the Travancore palace in 1939, where he served as a court artist for 39 years. He toured extensively, performing abroad in Europe and the United States. In 1968, he became the main instructor at the Kathakali Vidyalayam of Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) in Aluva. He founded a Kathakali school near his home and was the chief teacher and principal of the Kudamaloor Kala Kendram, established in his honor in 1978. He also inspired and co-founded the Satsangam Centre for Art and Culture in 1989 with his disciple Maryse Noiseux. A documentary film about his life was made in November 1988 and selected for national and international film festivals.
