Rhadha, a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and choreographer, is a prominent exponent of the Vazhuvoor style. Born on December 31, 1941, she is the younger sister of the iconic Bharatanatyam dancer Kumari Kamala. Rhadha was initiated into the art of dance at a young age, beginning her training at five years old. She received her training alongside her sister under the renowned guru Natyacharya Vazhuvoor Shri Ramaiah Pillai. Initially, Rhadha performed under the shadow of her celebrated sister, often in virtual anonymity. After a hiatus, particularly when her sister moved to the U.S., Rhadha returned to dance as both a performer and a teacher, gradually establishing her own identity in the Bharatanatyam world. She has consistently upheld the unadulterated form of the Vazhuvoor bani, known for its graceful movements, intricate footwork, and emphasis on abhinaya. Rhadha is noted for her unwavering adherence to this tradition, resisting the demand for innovation that might compromise the style's integrity. In 1982, Rhadha founded her dance school, Pushpanjali, in India, where she continues to be a fierce advocate of the Vazhuvoor tradition. Through Pushpanjali, she has trained numerous students, fostering the next generation of Bharatanatyam dancers. Her choreographic works include re-choreographing "Nowka Charitham" (originally by Kamala) and creating productions such as "Bhavaye Padmanabham," "Shivasakthi," "Meenakshi Ammai Pillai Thamizh," and "Lakshmi Prabhavam". Her collaboration with violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman on the natya natakam "Jaya Jaya Devi" is considered one of her most celebrated productions. Rhadha has received significant recognition for her contributions to Indian classical dance. Her accolades include the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the Sangita Kala Acharya from the Music Academy, the Acharya Choodamani from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, and the Nritya Ratnakara award from the Cleveland Cultural Alliance. She is also referred to as Kalaimamani Smt. Rhadha. As of May 2024, at 82 years old, she continues to be active, conducting workshops and performances.
