Kalamandalam Kusum Gopalakrishnan, a renowned Indian classical dancer and author, was born in Mehsana, Gujarat, on September 28, 1943, though she hails from Kodungallur. She received her training at Kalamandalam, an esteemed institution for Indian performing arts. In 1963, she married Guru Gopalakrishnan, a prominent exponent of Kerala Natanam. Together, they significantly contributed to the Indian dance landscape, continuing their activities with their troupe and films, and conducting dance classes in Madras (now Chennai). A notable achievement in their career was a record series of 100-day performance concerts in 1968 at the Navaratna Theatres. The couple also dedicated 22 years to teaching dance at the New Era School in Panchgani, where they developed a unique teaching methodology called 'Drishyakatha' narrative, which blended Kerala Natanam, free dance styles, and folk forms to make learning accessible to children. In 1994, they returned to Kerala, eventually settling in Chennai while also maintaining ties with Kodungallur. Kusum Gopalakrishnan is also an author, co-writing books such as 'Kerala Natanam,' which is recognized as an authentic and authoritative resource on the history and heritage of the dance form. She is recognized as a danseuse and performer of Kerala Natanam.
