🪔 About
Lalitha Sivakumar is a distinguished Indian Carnatic classical musician, revered guru, and prolific composer, born on August 29, 1947, in Tamil Nadu, India. She hails from an illustrious musical lineage, being the daughter of the legendary mridangam maestro Palghat T. S. Mani Iyer, who was the first mridangist to receive the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Padma Bhushan awards. At the age of 18, Lalitha Sivakumar married I. Sivakumar, the son of the eminent Carnatic vocalist D. K. Pattammal. Her formal vocal training in Carnatic music began under her mother-in-law, D. K. Pattammal, on April 29, 1966, starting with the kriti 'Sri Lalithe' in raga Bhairavi. Prior to this, she also received tutelage from veteran vocalist Sri K. V. Narayanaswami. Lalitha Sivakumar became known for vocally accompanying D. K. Pattammal in concerts for approximately four decades, a role she embraced after a brief period as a solo performer. Her performances and accompaniment earned praise from leading Carnatic vocalists such as D. K. Jayaraman, K. V. Narayanaswamy, and M. S. Subbulakshmi. As a composer, Lalitha Sivakumar has created and set music to numerous kritis, tillanas, and bhajans in various Indian languages, with her compositions noted for their intricate blend of musical elements and emphasis on language. She is a leading guru of the D.K.P. school of Carnatic Music, perpetuating the tradition established by her mother-in-law. Her teaching methodology is characterized by its focus on vocal purity, emotional depth (bhavam), discipline, laya precision, and nuanced expression, and she has trained many students globally who have become professional performing artists and teachers. She is also prominently known as the mother and guru of acclaimed Carnatic vocalist Nithyashree Mahadevan. Awards & Honours: ISAI RASA MAAMANI (2016), Annual Music Award (2024), Viveka Rathna Award for Teaching Music (2024), Guru Vandana Samaroh Honour.
