Dr. Lavanya Rajagopalan is a distinguished Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, arts educator, and cultural ambassador, with over 35 years immersed in the ancient art form. She received her foundational training in Bharatanatyam and nattuvangam under the legendary Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy at Shree Bharatalaya in Chennai, India. Her musical education includes training in Indian classical music from notable gurus Shri Seetharama Sharma, Shri. Srinivasa Iyengar, and Padmabhushan Vidwan Madurai Shri. N. Krishnan. Dr. Rajagopalan made her solo dance debut in 1992 and has since performed to critical acclaim on stages across India and the United States. In 2002, Dr. Rajagopalan founded Silambam Houston, a non-profit institution dedicated to Indian classical arts, which has grown into a significant force in the US arts landscape. As its Executive Artistic Director, she oversees comprehensive arts offerings, including immersive training in various Indian classical art forms, community outreach, and platforms for artists. Silambam Houston was recognized as a 'Houston Cultural Treasure' in 2023 under her leadership. Dr. Rajagopalan is also a prolific creator, having conceptualized and directed numerous innovative dance productions such as 'Maya – A Midsummer Night's Dream', 'Dance of the Cosmos', and 'Chakravyuh'. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes a student-centric, holistic approach, imparting not only dance techniques but also traditional values, stagecraft, nattuvangam, layam, and Carnatic music concepts. She has taught hundreds of students over three decades, fostering well-rounded, artistically sensitive, and culturally refined individuals. Dr. Rajagopalan uniquely integrates her Ph.D. in Biochemistry with arts education through programs like 'Dancing into STEM', promoting cultural education and science concepts for diverse audiences.
