Lei Muzi, a 13-year-old Chinese student, has made history in the realm of Indian classical dance by becoming the first Bharatanatyam dancer fully trained in China to perform her "Arangetram". This significant debut, a graduation ceremony for Bharatanatyam dancers, took place on Sunday, August 11, 2024, in Beijing, China. Her performance was attended by notable figures such as celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer Leela Samson, Indian diplomats, and a large audience of Chinese fans. Lei Muzi, also known as Dudu, began her Bharatanatyam journey in 2014, at the age of three, at a school run by noted Chinese Bharatanatyam dancer Jin Shan Shan. Jin Shan Shan herself is a pioneering figure, having been the first Chinese dancer to complete her own Arangetram in New Delhi, India, in 1999. Lei's Arangetram is considered a landmark in the inheritance of Bharatanatyam, as it marks the first time a Chinese student, trained by a Chinese teacher, has completed this ceremony entirely within China. Lei expresses a deep connection to Bharatanatyam, stating that for her, it is not only a beautiful art and dance form but also the embodiment of Indian culture. She finds great fascination in the gorgeous and graceful movements of the dance. Following her historic debut, Lei Muzi is scheduled to perform in Chennai, India, later in August 2024. Her achievement highlights the growing popularity of Indian classical dance forms in China and fosters cultural exchange between the two nations.
