Leela Desai, also known as Lila Desai, was a prominent Indian actress and dancer active during the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Newark, New Jersey, while her parents were on an American tour, she was brought to India as an infant and subsequently grew up there. Her father, Umedram Lalbhai Desai, was a Gujarati doctor, and her mother, Satyabala Devi, was a musician from Bihar. Desai received a formal education in classical Hindustani dancing, specifically Kathak, under esteemed gurus such as Amaladevi, Sohanlal, Lacchumaharaj, and Shambhu Maharaj. She also pursued academic education in music at Marris College of Music in Lucknow, which is now known as Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya. Desai's exceptional dance talent was instrumental in her entry into the film industry. She made her debut in the 1937 film "President," directed by Nitin Bose, where she performed a Manipuri dance sequence. This performance was notable as it marked the first time this dance form was filmed, earning her widespread acclaim and overnight fame. She starred in approximately 11 Indian movies, often showcasing her graceful performances and pioneering on-screen dance sequences. Leela Desai was an ardent dancer and a follower of Sohan Lal. Beyond her acting roles, she also worked as a choreographer for the movie "Dev Kanya" in 1946. After making several films, she embarked on a successful dance tour across India with her own troupe. Her career, though spanning about a decade, significantly impacted Indian cinema by bridging traditional Indian dance and music with modern cinematic forms. She also ventured into film production, serving as an associate producer for the 1961 film "Kabuliwala".
