Pandit Lachhu Maharaj, born Bajinath Prasad on October 16, 1901, in Lucknow, India, was a legendary figure in Indian classical dance, particularly renowned for his contributions to the Kathak form. He hailed from the illustrious Lucknow gharana, a family deeply rooted in Kathak traditions. His father was Kalka Prasad, and he was the paternal uncle of the equally legendary Birju Maharaj. Lachhu Maharaj received rigorous training for nearly a decade from his uncle, Pandit Bindadin Maharaj, who was a celebrated court dancer of Awadh. He began performing publicly at the tender age of ten, showcasing exceptional talent in expressing grace, emotions, and sensuality, often noted for bringing an untainted innocence to his performances. Beyond Kathak, he also delved into Hindustani vocal music, the tabla, and the pakhawaj, enriching his understanding of rhythm and melody. Lachhu Maharaj played a pivotal role in popularizing Kathak by taking it to a wider audience through his work in the burgeoning Hindi film industry in Bombay (now Mumbai). He made his debut as a film choreographer, creating iconic dance sequences for classic movies such as *Mahal* (1949), *Mughal-e-Azam* (1960), *Chhoti Chhoti Baten* (1965), and *Pakeezah* (1972). His choreography was instrumental in enhancing the grace and expressive power of actresses like Madhubala and Meena Kumari on screen. In addition to his film work, he composed several acclaimed ballets, including *Goutam Buddha*, *Chandravali*, and *Bharatiya Kisan*. As an institution builder, Lachhu Maharaj was the founder-director of the Kathak Kendra, an institution established by the Uttar Pradesh Government in Lucknow, dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Kathak dance. His immense contributions to the art form were recognized with numerous accolades, including the prestigious President's Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1957, the highest honor for performing artists in India. He passed away on July 19, 1978, leaving behind a profound legacy. His disciples, such as Nalini and Kamalini, continued to carry forward his artistic lineage. In his honor, a commemorative postage stamp was issued in 2001, and a birth centenary festival was organized in Lucknow in 2007, further cementing his place as a titan of Indian classical dance. The Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow also has a "Lachhu Maharaj Kaksh" (hall) for Kathak students. Awards & Honours: President's Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1957).
