Guru Mampuzha Madhava Panicker (1900–1973) was a distinguished Indian classical dancer and instructor, primarily recognized for his profound contributions to Kathakali. Born in 1900 in Kottappadi, near Guruvayur in the Thrissur district of Kerala, Panicker became a prominent figure in the Kalluvazhi (midland) school of Kathakali. He was among the first pupils of the legendary Kathakali maestro Pattikkantodi Ramunni Menon. Throughout his career, Panicker demonstrated exceptional skill in portraying a wide array of Kathakali characters, mastering both the 'paccha' heroes such as Arjuna, Bhima, and Daksha, and the 'katti' villains like Ravana, Duryodhana, and Herod. His innovative contributions to the art form included presenting Biblical stories through Kathakali, compressing full-length productions, and even incorporating Hindi songs into performances. Panicker served as a chief artiste in several esteemed palace troupes, including those at Punnathur, Katathanad, and Nilampur, as well as various art centers both within and outside Kerala. His dedication to teaching and institutional leadership was equally significant. He taught at the renowned Kerala Kalamandalam University of Art and Culture in Cheruthuruthi, Kerala, where he also held the position of former principal. Additionally, he served as principal and instructor at the International Centre for Kathakali in New Delhi. In recognition of his immense contributions to Indian performing arts, M. Madhava Panicker was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1972. He passed away in 1973. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1972).
