Mahankali Srimannarayana Murthy is a highly esteemed figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for his profound contributions to Kuchipudi. Born in 1941 in Kuchipudi village, Krishna district, he was immersed in the art form from a very young age. His father, Yakshagana Chakravarti Mahankali Chinna Satyam Narayana, introduced him to Kuchipudi when he was just five years old. Srimannarayana Murthy received extensive training from several eminent gurus, including his father, Vedantam Parvateesam, Chinta Krishna Murthy, and Vempati Chinna Satyam, who collectively shaped him into the dancer he became. Settling in Bapatla, Srimannarayana Murthy dedicated his life to the propagation and preservation of Kuchipudi. He established the Sri Satyanarayana Kuchipudi Natya Academy, where he served as a guru for an impressive 66 years, imparting his knowledge and artistry to thousands of students. His teaching legacy is significant, with many of his disciples going on to establish their own dance institutions. A notable student is P Rama Devi, a senior Kuchipudi dance exponent who founded the Sri Sai Nataraja Academy of Kuchipudi Dance in Secunderabad in 1989. Throughout his illustrious career, Srimannarayana Murthy performed in over 3,000 plays and dances across India. He was celebrated for his portrayals of significant characters in various Nritya Natakas, including Ardhanareeswaram, Ramayanam, Nartanashala, Rukmini Kalyanam, Siva, Bramha, Nandi, Kanva Maharshi, Janaka Raju, Sisupaludu, Ushaparinayam, Sasirekha Parinayam, Parvathikalyanam, Ksheerasagara Madhanam, and Srinivasa Kalyanam. His dedication and artistry have earned him numerous accolades, solidifying his status as a revered guru and performer in the world of Indian classical dance.
