Dr. Mala Shashikanth is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, recognized as a performing artist and teacher with over 35 years of experience. She is a prime disciple of Guru Natyacharya V.S. Koushik from Karnataka, and for Mohiniyattam, she trained under the legendary Dr. Kanak Rele. Dr. Shashikanth holds a Master of Arts degree and earned her Doctorate on "Karnataka Parampara" from the prestigious Bangalore University. Her career highlights include universal appreciation for her Kathakali dance recitals and extensive performances at prestigious venues like Sark Summit in Delhi and Sangeet Ruthi Academy. She is the author of "Paramparadhara," a book exploring the evolution and growth of dance art in Karnataka. Dr. Shashikanth has also undertaken significant research into the history of dance evolution in Karnataka, with a particular focus on Chalukyan empire sculpture, translating these visual forms into performing art. She has choreographed notable dance dramas, including "Sitas." In 1989, she founded Kaishiki Natyavahini, an academy dedicated to promoting the Nanjangudu Parampare and Kolar Parampare dance forms, two distinct sub-styles of Karnataka's dance traditions. The academy also provides training in music, yoga, and Sanskrit shlokas, emphasizing moral and ethical living. Additionally, Dr. Mala Shashikanth serves as the Principal Secretary of Karnataka Bharatagama Prathishtana, an academy of performing arts committed to upholding classical traditions. She has taught numerous national and international students, fostering the next generation of classical dancers.
