Malavika Sarukkai, born in 1959 in Mumbai, is an acclaimed Indian classical dancer and choreographer specializing in Bharatanatyam. She began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of seven, learning from esteemed gurus Kalyanasundaram Pillai of the Tanjavur school and S.K. Rajaratnam Pillai of the Vazhuvoor School. Further enhancing her artistry, she studied abhinaya, the art of expression, under Kalanidhi Narayanan. Sarukkai also delved into Odissi, training under renowned gurus Kelucharan Mohapatra and Ramani Ranjan Jena. She made her debut performance in Mumbai at the age of twelve and has since performed extensively across India and internationally, including at prestigious venues like the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Known for her "innovative-within-tradition" approach, Sarukkai's choreographies are celebrated for their dynamism, grace, and ability to connect with contemporary audiences. She has expanded the classical vocabulary, often questioning the traditional male-centric repertoire and exploring diverse themes such as ecology, rivers, and the feminine divine (Shakti). Her life and artistic journey have been documented in films like "Samarpanam," commissioned by the Government of India, and the BBC/WNET television documentary "Dancing." In 2015, Sarukkai founded the Kalavaahini Trust in Chennai, an initiative dedicated to supporting and mentoring young, talented classical dancers, reflecting her commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists. While primarily a solo artist, she has collaborated with scholars and artists from various disciplines. She mentors a select number of senior dance students, focusing on a deeper vision of dance beyond mere performance.
