Mamata Shankar, born on January 7, 1955, is an accomplished Indian actress, dancer, and choreographer, known for her significant contributions to both Bengali cinema and the world of dance. She is the daughter of legendary dancers Uday Shankar and Amala Shankar, and niece of sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. Mamata Shankar received her foundational training in dance and choreography at the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre in Calcutta (Kolkata) under the tutelage of her mother, Amala Shankar. Her training also included basic techniques in classical forms such as Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, and Kathakali. Following in her father's footsteps, Mamata Shankar developed and propagated the distinctive Uday Shankar style of dance. This innovative style is a fusion that adapts European theatrical techniques to Indian dance, incorporating elements of Indian classical, folk, and tribal dances, while maintaining the intrinsic grammar of classical Indian dance. It is characterized by its contemporary and pioneering nature, moving beyond the rigid classicism of traditional forms. Shankar made her film debut in Mrinal Sen's "Mrigayaa" in 1976, a film that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. She has since acted in numerous films by acclaimed directors including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Rituparno Ghosh, Buddhadeb Dasgupta, and Gautam Ghosh. In 1978, she founded the Mamata Shankar Ballet Troupe (initially 'Stradivarius' in 1977), which later registered as the Mamata Shankar Dance Company in 2006. She also established 'Udayan' – a training center for her troupe – on December 8, 1986, in Kolkata, where she imparts lessons in the Uday Shankar style of dance and choreography. Through her institution and troupe, she has choreographed and presented numerous dance-dramas and short pieces on diverse contemporary themes, including Rabindranath Tagore's "Chandalika," "Horikhela," "Aajker Ekalabya," "Milap," "Shikaar," "Mother Earth," and "Amritasya Putra." Her troupe has performed extensively worldwide, earning critical acclaim. In recognition of her profound contributions to Indian art, Mamata Shankar was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, by the Government of India in 2025.
