Mambalam Geetha was a distinguished figure in the realm of Indian classical dance, particularly celebrated for her profound contributions to Bharatanatyam. She was the foremost disciple of Guru Pandanallur Chokkalingam Pillai (1893–1968), a pivotal doyen of the Pandanallur style, who inherited and propagated the bani after its founder, Meenakshisundaram Pillai. Geetha was highly regarded for her brilliant technique and her compelling portrayals of dramatic roles, especially within the intricate Tanjore Quartet varnams. Her career was active during the 1950s and 1960s, a period when she played a crucial role in maintaining the purity and traditional aesthetics of the Pandanallur style. This particular style of Bharatanatyam is renowned for its emphasis on linear geometry in adavu technique, precise footwork, and an understated yet intense approach to abhinaya (expressive storytelling). Guru Chokkalingam Pillai, under whom Mambalam Geetha trained, relocated his teaching activities to Madras (now Chennai) in the mid-20th century, establishing a vital center for the style's dissemination among urban practitioners.
