Guru Mampuzha Madhava Panikkar (1900–1973) was a distinguished traditional Kathakali dancer and instructor, born in Kottappadi, near Guruvayur, in the Thrissur district of Kerala, India. He was a prominent exponent of the Kalluvazhi (midland) school of Kathakali. Panikkar was among the first disciples of the renowned Kathakali maestro Pattikkantodi Ramunni Menon. Throughout his career, he demonstrated exceptional skill in portraying both heroic characters, such as Arjuna, Bhima, and Daksha, and villainous roles like Ravana, Duryodhana, and Herod. His significant contributions to Kathakali included the innovative presentation of Biblical stories, the compression of full-length productions, and the introduction of Hindi songs into the traditional repertoire. He served as a chief artiste in various palace troupes, including those at Punnathur, Katathanad, and Nilampur, as well as at numerous art centers both within and outside Kerala. Panikkar dedicated a substantial part of his career to teaching, serving as a principal at the Kerala Kalamandalam University of Art and Culture in Cheruthuruthi, Kerala, and also as principal at the International Centre for Kathakali in New Delhi. He passed away in 1973. Awards & Honours: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1972).
