Pandita Maneesha Sathe is a highly acclaimed Indian classical Kathak dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized as a torchbearer of the Banaras Gharana. Born on May 26, 1953, Sathe began her Kathak training at the age of six under Pandit Balasaheb Gokhale in Pune. In 1964, at the age of eleven, she moved to Mumbai to become a disciple of the renowned actor, choreographer, and dancer Pandit Gopi Krishna, whose style deeply influenced her. In 1975, Maneesha Sathe established her dance school, Maneesha Nrityalaya, on Pune's Prabhat Road. She is known for her technical perfection, aesthetic approach, sensitivity, and imagination, having experimented with a wide variety of themes including traditional, modern, concrete, abstract, folk, and contemporary. She has choreographed over 200 traditional Kathak items and has performed on prestigious stages in India and internationally in countries such as Sweden, the U.K., the U.S.A., Canada, Bahrain, and Japan. Sathe encourages experimentation with other art forms, subject matters, and music, notably incorporating Japanese music into some of her Kathak performances. Her choreographies also address contemporary social issues like dowry and female infanticide. Beyond her academy, Sathe serves as a visiting professor at Savitribai Phule Pune University's Centre for Performing Arts, Pune's Bharati Vidyapeeth University, and the Institute of Management Studies' Videocon Academy of Fine and Performing Arts in Ahmednagar. She has collaborated with Japanese musician Mr. Yasuhito Takimoto for over 20 years, performing in Japan, India, and other countries. Her profound artistry and dedication have inspired generations of dancers worldwide.
