Margi Sajeev Narayana Chakyar is a distinguished Indian classical artist, primarily recognized as an exponent and guru of Koodiyattam, the ancient Sanskrit theatre tradition originating from Kerala. Born around 1964 into a lineage of Koodiyattam legends, he embarked on his artistic journey at a tender age, receiving rigorous training in the traditional gurukula system. His principal gurus were his revered father, Moozhikulam Kochukuttan Chakyar, and his esteemed uncle, Ammannur Madhava Chakyar, both pivotal figures in the art form. This intensive training encompassed not only the physical aspects of performance but also deep immersion in Sanskrit language and Hindu scriptures, essential for mastering Koodiyattam's intricate narrative and expressive elements. He completed his arangetram, or debut stage performance, around the age of 14, prior to 1981. In 1981, he became one of the inaugural students in the Koodiyattam department established at Margi, a prominent institution in Thiruvananthapuram dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Kerala's traditional performing arts. Currently, he holds the significant position of head of Koodiyattam at Margi Thiruvananthapuram, guiding the next generation of artists. With a career spanning over 45 years as a Koodiyattam actor and guru, Sajeev Narayana Chakyar is highly regarded for his profound versatility as a performer. He is particularly acclaimed for his ability to portray complex characters and emotions with remarkable subtlety, utilizing his eyes and facial expressions to great effect, and for his command over physically demanding roles. His contributions to Koodiyattam have extended to the international stage, notably a performance at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in 2001 as part of a Margi troupe, following Koodiyattam's recognition as a 'Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity'. While his primary expertise lies in Koodiyattam, he is also associated with Kathakali through Margi, which promotes both art forms, and has participated in festivals featuring both classical dance traditions.
